Although the machines failed, Leonardo made landmark discoveries about center of gravity and air currents by observing how birds stay aloft without flapping their wings. Left-handed and believed to be dyslexic, Leonardo wrote his notes backwards, in mirror image, which kept the ink from smudging as his hand dragged across the page.
